How To Treat Unusual Windows

Not all windows are created equal, and it can be tough to find the right treatments for every window in your home--especially if you have unusually-shaped or oddly-placed windows. You shouldn’t have to live with minimal privacy or sun glares just because your windows don’t fit the typical mold.

There’s a window treatment solution for every challenging window--take a look at the eight styles we’ve outlined below.

Shower Windows

A shower window can provide great natural light and give your daily bathing sessions a more earthy, exotic feel. However, unless you live in the middle of nowhere or on a deserted island, chances are you’ll need some kind of privacy treatment on your shower window.

You’ll need to choose a durable window treatment that can withstand large amounts of water and moisture. Mini-blinds will be your best bet for a shower window--not only are they economical and easy-to-replace, but they can also be cleaned quickly and will hold up better in extreme conditions.

Behind-the-Bed Windows

In many cases, bedrooms are set up with windows directly behind the bed. To give the illusion of height without detracting from the headboard, you’ll have to choose your window treatments carefully. Full-length drapes are often a natural choice in this situation, but shutters can work just as well.

A window shutter will provide ample privacy while still letting in natural light, and the architectural features of the shutters will add a design element to the room while still remaining simple enough to not overwhelm when paired with the headboard and other patterns in the room.

Bay Windows

Bay windows are a beautiful architectural and design feature for any room, and when uncovered can be a great source of natural light while providing an excellent view outside. Cellular and roman shades are both natural choices for bay windows--they offer a sleek way to block out light, as the shallow profile just barely skims the window when closed. When raised, the folds in roman shades add a nice frame to bay windows, while cellular shades all but disappear.

Cathedral-Style Windows

Most people choose cathedral windows for their dramatic design effect in a home. However, if you must cover these windows with a treatment, try to leave the arched top bare to avoid completely cancelling out the elaborate shape.

Install inside-mounted shades in the lower parts of the window for minimal detraction from the original shape of the window. A sheer drapery panel tied back to the sides of the window frame could also work as an extension of the window’s already-dramatic style.

Staircase Windows

Staircase windows can be tricky, especially if your home features a bank of windows that trail up the stairs. If you go too heavy on design, the window treatment paired with the stairs can give off a busy, cluttered look. Try to stick to clean lines in wood blinds or shutters to add structure, or a simple sheer drapery panel for a more sleek and modern design.

Window Seat Windows

A window seat is a fantastic decorating opportunity. Naps, an afternoon reading break, or just a cozy spot to watch a storm roll in or the sun set can all be enhanced by the right window treatment.

Shutters can add charm and sophistication to a window seat--the classic structure of the shutters providing an outline to this carved-out space. A softer, more romantic look can be achieved with roman shades or a sheer drapery panel.

Window Walls

A full wall of windows can feel overwhelming with the wrong window treatment. If you’re looking to filter the light or add privacy in a long bank of windows, consider a minimal treatment that will do the trick while blending in with the room.

Cellular shades in a neutral color can provide a neat and tidy look, and can be hung at different intervals for a quick and easy way to add a more stylish element to the room. Small groupings of sheer drapery panels hung high toward the ceiling can give the room a chic look.

Garage Windows

FInally, garage windows might be the last place you’d imagine a window treatment, but can often be a necessary privacy addition. Typically, the garage isn’t the cleanest spot in the home, so you’ll want to choose a treatment that is both durable and easy to wipe clean. Faux wood blinds are an ideal choice in a garage--they’re inexpensive, reliable, and can still provide a smart, polished look.
